St Bride’s Centre

The St. Bride’s Centre is located in the village of Douglas, in the heart of rural South Lanarkshire.

The building that now houses the St.Bride’s Centre was constructed in 1876 as a school, with extensions built in 1893 and 1903. The building originally accommodated the Junior Secondary School in Douglas, after which it was purchased by the Church of Scotland.

The building has been used as a multi-purpose community facility for 16 years. In May 1998 it was reopened after major refurbishment.

Currently owned by The Church of Scotland, the Centre is leased over a 21 year period to Douglas St. Bride’s Community Group; this lease expires in 2013.

In recent years, the St. Bride’s Centre has suffered from a lack of investment. The physical fabric of the building continues to deteriorate. An antiquated heating system and the recent rise in fuel costs have also made the building very costly to run.

We are now faced with the prospect of this important community facility falling into disrepair. As an organisation, Douglas St. Bride’s Community Group is aware of the importance of this building which provides the only space for community activities and events locally. We hope to breathe new life into the old place through a major programme of investment and reconfiguration.
